Homeward Bound is a transitional housing program for homeless, impending homeless and domestic violence families with children in Maricopa County, Arizona. Our mission is to assist families achieve economic independence, secure long-term, safe, affordable housing and break multi-generational cycles of homelessness, welfare and domestic violence.
Homeward Bound was founded in 1990 and has since grown to be named the largest provider of transitional housing for homeless and domestic violence families in Arizona. In 2000, Homeward Bound completed construction on The Thunderbirds Family Village, a five-acre secured campus that contains 80 two-bedroom housing units. This housing focuses on younger mothers and their children that have been victimized by domestic violence and homelessness. In addition to 80 apartments at The Thunderbirds Family Village, Homeward Bound owns and operates 75 housing units throughout Maricopa County.
In addition to housing, Homeward Bound provides a comprehensive social services program that includes case management, mental health counseling, children’s programming, affordable and accessible childcare, employment counseling, career development classes, GED classes, career clothing and accessible health care. Homeward Bound is a self-sufficiency program. Homeward Bound believes employment that can sustain market housing is the key to stabilizing these families and breaking the cycles of poverty, homelessness and domestic violence.
The effectiveness of Homeward Bound is measured by the ability of our families to transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency in approximately 12 to 24 months. Homeward Bound is a program model designed for families willing to work towards repairing their lives and becoming self-sufficient. Our families pay a program service fee of 30% of their adjusted gross income for their housing and support services. Of families graduating from Homeward Bound, 95% successfully complete the program, including 10% who purchase their own homes.
Homeward Bound is a “hand up, not a hand out.”
